17 goals, 9 assists: 3 reasons Manchester United should consider exciting winger

It increasingly looks likely that Manchester United may need to look elsewhere other than Jadon Sancho this summer for an extra creative spark.

While ESPN suggest Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele as a possible alternative, United may need to be more creative than simply chasing big names.

One more off-beat option would be to take a look at rising Brentford star Said Benrahma.

Hear us out with three reasons why he could be a good signing for Manchester United…

He’s prolific

Don’t write him off as another Dan James, a raw yet untested talent just because he played in the Championship.

Last season James scored four Championship goals and provided seven assists. Benrahma has been far more impactful, and is older at 25.

This past campaign he scored 17 goals and provided nine assists, showing he is a touch above.

His performances also included two hat-tricks, as he took Brentford to the brink of promotion.

The Algerian plays mainly on the left and would take pressure off Marcus Rashford.

Value

When you look at how much Borussia Dortmund are demanding for Jadon Sancho (£108 million) and Aston Villa want for Jack Grealish (£80 million) it makes sense for United to look at better value alternatives.

Clubs are circling for Benrahma after Brentford’s play-off defeat, with Football London claiming Chelsea are keen, and The Mail stating that Arsenal are showing interest.

Sky Sports report Brentford’s asking price for Benrahma to be ‘over £25 million’ with Football London reporting it would be £30 million.

This is still a bargain compared to the amount being asked for Grealish, and leaves money left over to sign a right-sided player.

Trickery

WhoScored.com named Benrahma this week as one of six possible alternatives to Sancho.

Notably his dribbing is more effective, with 3.3 successful take-ons per game compared to Sancho’s 2.4.

They are in different leagues of course, and this is not to say Benrahma is better, but it does underline the quality he would bring.

The 25-year-old would make United’s attack more unpredictable than it currently is, with his desire to take players on, and his eye for goals makes him even more valuable.

There is a good chance he could follow countryman Riyad Mahrez’s success in the Premier League and this is the type of gamble United should consider taking, as opposed to chasing big names.
